Behind The Lens: Sama Photo + Film

Adelaide-based photographer and owner of Sama Photo + Film, Sabrina Maschke, talks what’s trending in wedding photography, the value of video, plus the most iconic shot for every couple to capture on their big day.

What’s trending in wedding photography?

In recent months, there has been a growing interest in incorporating creative elements like motion blur and vintage film aesthetics. Mastering motion blur and vintage film techniques adds depth and nostalgia to visuals. Motion blur, controlled by shutter speed, imparts a sense of movement and dynamism, enhancing action sequences and conveying speed. Using a film camera or adding a vintage film look in post, like grain overlays and faded or muted colour, evoke a retro aesthetic reminiscent of classic cinema, adding warmth and character to footage.

Direct flash photography is also big at the moment. This is where you simply point your flash at the subject without adding any modifiers, like umbrellas or softboxes. You make sure the flash is lined up with the camera and you take a shot. This technique creates images that are intense and borderline surreal. Colours are strong and exposures are blown out.

Lastly, there's continued emphasis on capturing authentic and candid moments. Couples are leaning towards more relaxed, unposed shots that truly reflect the emotions of the day. Most clients are not used to being in front of the camera, and they also don’t want staged photos. So, creating an atmosphere where they can move naturally and be themselves creates the most authentic photos.

What’s the most iconic wedding shot a couple should capture on their big day?

While it ultimately depends on the couple's preferences, a timeless and iconic shot can unfold during the first look before the ceremony, the groom's heartfelt reaction, the exchange of vows, the cake cutting or Champagne tower moment, the first dance, or the mesmerising sunset photos. One personal favourite of mine is capturing the newlyweds walking down the aisle with rose petals in the air.

Whether it happens during the ceremony or reception, these iconic shots have the power to encapsulate the very essence of the day or a particular moment, becoming cherished memories that last for years to come.

Not every couple opts for a videographer due to cost and time. What’s your advice – video or not?

More couples are recognising  the unique storytelling capabilities that videography offers. While both photography and videography capture precious moments, video footage adds an extra dimension by incorporating movement, sound and the ambient atmosphere. Couples often find that a well-crafted wedding video allows them to relive the emotions and details of their day in a more immersive and intense way.

We’ve heard physical wedding albums are popular again. Any tips for preparing one?

I really think there's something magical about having your photos in print, especially in the form of a beautiful album. In a world with so many options, I always tell my clients that what they invest in is what they'll get. I highly recommend going for top-notch quality because, after all, these memories are meant to last a lifetime.

I've partnered with one of the best printing factories to ensure my clients get the crème de la crème. Ordering is a breeze – straight from their personal online gallery. They have the flexibility to either create and order on their own or, if they prefer, just pick their favourite photos and I'll create a draft for them. It's all about making the process as smooth and personalised as possible.

What’s your number one piece of advice when it comes to working with a photographer on your big day?

Communication is key. Establish a solid timeline with your photographer before the wedding day, share your vision, and discuss any specific shots, moments and people that are particularly important to you. Trust your photographer's expertise, but also feel comfortable expressing your preferences. A collaborative approach ensures that the final images authentically capture the honest and emotional connection of your unique story.
