For Calèche’s Creative Director and Head Designer, Liz Foubert, it’s a matter of timing, observation, and intuition that guide the designer’s European-inspired collections. Picking up on cues from overseas trends and red-carpet moments, the atelier is known for its quality, elegance, and longevity.
“As a child I was constantly creating, I’d spend my time making bags and clothes from odds and ends, drafting newspaper patterns on the floor and hand-stitching when I didn’t have access to a sewing machine.”
Shaped by many remarkable creatives and colleagues throughout the years, Liz has a deep admiration for the craftsmanship of those who have worked and continue to work alongside her. “From designing, to patternmaking and cutting, to the final stitch, every one of our team members plays a role in bringing our gowns to life from start to finish.”
Adhering to Calèche’s signature elegant style, Liz believes bridal couture should maintain a timeless approach, whilst striving for the perfect balance between current and enduring. “It’s important that our brides feel confident that in 30 years’ time they’ll still see themselves reflected in their stylistic choice, rather than feeling they were beholden to a popular style or trend.”
With a deep connection to her European heritage, and a heart-warming appreciation for her mother-in-law, Colette Foubert’s couture legacy, Liz hopes to continue to honour the remarkable history of Calèche, as she continues to craft stunning gowns. “I feel so truly honoured that the gowns we have created become part of such a meaningful moment, and will be loved, remembered, and cherished for a lifetime.
